Lately John Pearse (maker of strings and assorted nice guitar gadgets, www.johnpearsestrings.com)has really been pushing their line of wooden armrests that fasten onto the lower bout of the guitar.According to their literature they produce a more comfortable playing position and since no part of the arm touches the soundboard, a 15-20% improvement in projection. That's a lot.Has anybody tried one of these things out. Are they an improvement or just this month's widget aimed at Rubes like me!

For the curious John Pearce was a great english folk singer/player.
Interestingly to me I've never seen or heard of an armrest.
I'd like to try one

Funny old world, I just joined this forum to ask about these things.

Over the summer, I began to show signs of tendonitis in my right wrist/arm. I find I have to keep my arm/wrist totally straight when I play. Has anybody else
found the Pearse helps with this? Also: do they fit on any guitar? I play a Guild M-20 (less desirable '90s version), and am worried I'll accidentally
order an armrest designed for a dreadnought body shape.

I use the Rasgueo-Rest armrest, and it keeps my fore-arm from getting numb, or indentation-marks from happening on my arm from the sharp top edge of my
acoustic Guitar. It gives a nice curved surface for my arm. It is transparent, and my arm covers up the arm-rest anyway, so I just care how it feels. It feels
good. When I am comfortable, playing is just more productive and fun. I am tall, and the Rasgueo-Rest keeps me from "hunching-over" the Guitar.

Last month I played a friend's guitar with one of these and I think they are great.

The question you have to ask yourself is if you want to attach a semi-permanent object to your guitar.

These do not slip on and off. They are mounted on with the same type of bonding material as a pickguard.

I have a 1960s Martin and I can't bear the thought of it growing an appendage in its old age, so I won't buy one. But if were a professional I'd probably mount one to the a guitar I gig with. I think you really do notice a difference in projection.

I've never tried one myself, but from what I've read they may or may not work for you depending on your guitar.

There is a commonly recommended experiment you can try to see if you'll benefit from one of these. First, get into your normal playing position and rest your arm on your guitar like you normally do. If you play in more than one position or style, try to use the one that has your arm resting on the top's surface the most. Then play some music that is representative. Listen carefully to what you hear.

Now without changing anything else, lift your arm off the surface of the guitar. In other words, let your arm ONLY rest on the very edge of the guitar (you may need to roll up your sleeves as well), or lift it off the guitar entirely. This will simulate what you could expect from having the armrest attached. Listen to any change in sound as you play. If you hear more sound as a result, the armrest would be a benefit. How much benefit only you can...
