Posts: 6 04/04/09 14:57:33	Tags : None Hello to all. Does anyone have any tips on developing speed? I can play a number of pieces at a moderate speed but I lose accuracy fast when I try to play pieces at concert speed. I am generally working on ragtime stuff, and lately some Fahey. I am guessing the solution is just regular practice with a metronome, gradually increasing tempo by a few BPM.

Posts: 45 04/05/09 09:25:00	What exactly is concert speed? I don't even know if you have aspirations of playing live, in a concert situation, so pardon my assumptions here. You can practice with your metronome at ever-increasing tempi..............but it's only a metronome. Then there's concert speed................ I'll tell you what concert speed is: It's the speed you end up playing, that is way too fast because you haven't actually played in front of an audience! Now the speed you might intend to play is another story................Been there, still do that, and I've been playing a very long time. There is absolutely no substitute for actually 'doing it'. Being able to accurately, and cleanly, play these songs you're practicing, is important, but only to a point. Once you get in front of an audience, it may well feel like you haven't got a clue. The most important bit of advice I can give you is KNOW THE SONG INSIDE AND OUT and when you finally get in front of an audience, don't play for them: Play For Yourself. And it's more important to be able to play it slowly, phrased properly, than fast. You can't play the second note if you don't finish the first........... Posts: 4 04/09/09 12:15:31	Practice playing slowly and make sure you have good tone and clean execution. Once you are satisfied with your tone and execution, push it a little bit faster. Go in increments, getting faster over time. But be sure to stay in tempo; don't rush one part and play other parts slowly (it won't sound good). The other thing I'd suggest is to compartmentalize short phrases (say betwee 1-4 measures long) and practice getting them clean at first, and then (once clean) speed them up. Don't try an entire piece like this as your bound to be frustrated. A guitar player who's playing faster than he capable of playing is going to sound sloppy and immature. DON'T BE THAT GUY!
