The new guitar program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee got off to a good start this past year with 11 students enrolled as guitar performance majors and 9 others involved in guitar studies as part of other programs. Special events included masterclasses presented by Billy McLaughlin, Pino Forastiere, Bobby Broom and Jorge Morel; concerts by Pino Forastiere, Ren Izquierdo and Jorge Morel; special presentations by Paul Bowman, Jorge Morel, Bobby Broom and Peter Baime; and a Meet the Guitar/Composer Forum with Don Ross. This coming semester marks the beginning of both the new Master of Music program in Guitar Performance and a Suzuki and College Preparatory program in guitar. Altogether, we are delighted with this auspicious beginning and the rapid pace of development, and look forward to an exciting second year which begins the week of September 6.
One unique feature of the guitar program at UWM is that it is the only college-level program in finger-style guitar in the world.
As part of this program, I will be offering a survey course in finger-style guitar that will draw on an unparalleled media archive. I would like to welcome anyone interested in finger-style guitar to sign up for this class. We are going to have a good time. This semester the class will meet in the UWM Golda Meir Library in room E281. The media playback, internet connection and projection video in this room will be great for the multi-media lecture/presentations. And the proximity to music reference materials and computers will be very convenient. I have designed the performance requirements of the class to be able to accommodate students at a variety of levels. If you have any questions or comments, please call.
Very best regards,
