i just bought an 8 string MSA Super Slide lap steel. Awesome instrument! I'm totally new to lap steel ( I'm a keyboard player and make my living at it) although I play a little resonaltor - I own a Beard Mahogany R and have it tuned to G - GBDGBD. I can find my way around it pretty easily playing bluegrass as well as blues. My question is - what tuning should I use on my new lap steel? I have it tuned to C6 - ACEGACEG (low to high). I can hear country, swing and Hawaiian in that tuning but is it the best tuning for also playing Delta blues? When I try to do blues it sounds kind of Hawaiian. Should I just give it more time or is there a better tuning for what I want to do.
Thanks in advance for your opinions, Robert Sands |

I always thought the C6 tuning was pretty much the standard for those things.

I have my Fender Dlx 8 in E6, basically ignore the 6th notes for blues except when they're useful for minor-chord construction. This could be because I come from a 6-string bottleneck background though, where open G or A and open D or E are most common.

How about an extended E7TH?
Low-hi : E,G#, B, D,E,G#,B,E.. You can get country,Blues and even some good southern rock type sounds. If you use these gauges, low - hi:.056w,.046w,.038w,.034w,.030w,.022,.018,.015 you can switch toC3minor7th, A6 or B11th without changing gauges. Cindi Cashdollar has a few good tunings here: http://www.cindycashdollar.com/tunings/ Good luck, Larry |
