Hi there Paul, I suppose I want to ask the expert:
I am now using open A tuning (E C# A E A E for those who are not familiar) with the stock strings on my tricone.
It really makes it sing well. I do not know what the gauge the stock strings are, but I think they are fairly thin.
I bought a set of d'addario 'resonator' strings, and they are IDENTICAL to the D'addario acoustic 13 sets, except the 13 is now a 16. (16-56 gauge).
QUESTIONS:
1. Should I tune to open A with the resonator strings, or will that blow up my guitar neck and/or ruin the cones?
2. Could I possibly tune to standard with those resonator strings, or will that result in more neck/cone misery?
If not, then I will just get a regular set of 13's and sacrifice the thick high E string.
Any advice on a type of string for tricones? (phosphor bronze, 80/20 etc??)-- that makes question 3!
