What style of roundneck resonator is your favorite |
Lead | |

There are all different kinds of roundneck resonators on the market these days and each has its own characteristic tone. Players of certain styles tend to prefer one kind over the other. Which is your favorite? Why?

You would have to have played them all, wouldn't you ?
I've only tried single cone National + some cheap trash in the musicstore(f.x.Fender) Tore |

Gotta love my National tricone 1.5, but I play my delphi more. They sound totally different - the Delphi is REALLY loud and the tricone has a much more sophisticated sound. I play slide on the Delphi and slide plus picking and fingerstyle on the tricone, but after playing it, the tricone takes about half an hour for me to wipe it down and get all the sweat and fingerprints off it, so unless I'm gonna sit and play for an afternoon, I reach for the Delphi.

Hi everyone. I can see I posted a reply in May last year. Now I'm more experienced...I've got a National 30s triolian biscuit,a Regal woodbodied 30s spider and my last one is a Donmo metal tricone. If I go for the tone- I would choose the Regal spider(Quarterman cone)....it's so mellow/soft. Of course the tricone has more sustain, but I miss the tone.
I've also had the pleasure of visiting London Resonator Centre (Acoustic Heaven) and have in a way tried them all...but you get kind of confused trying all those resos in 2 hours. |

I 1st started out with a Galvaston (cheep)Spiderconed Resonator,
I played it for acouple of months and decided it needed a Tune Up.... so I bought a hand spun Quaterman Cone and a McIntyre pick up for it.... Well talk about get loud...then I plugged it in Geez what sound...........all in all I liked it but Something was Missing So I bought a Brass bodied Chrome plated Tricone no Electrics Well I fell in Love with this Reso.... I ended Up selling the Galvaston to I fella We call at the Other Web site's Arch Monkey,I think he likes it also But the Tricone has the Haunting Melodic sound That I like oh so much just my $0.02 It Really is Just all about the Music~SteveO |

After playing a bunch of poorly crafted Gibson
Dobro guitars,I bought a Gretsch Historic Series and I don't regret it at all. |

Assuming this thread does not specifically address new instruments, my favorite reso was a 1930s slotted head 12 string Dobro I had the oppotunity to play back in 1971. It had the best action of any 12 string I've ever held but I didn't have the $175 to purchase it. This has become a bit of an obsession of late and I am determined to own a 12 string reso. Since I can't afford to order a custom Dobro (or National) I'm considering a Stew-Mac kit, butchering an import or making a scratch metal body (I'm a sheet metal welder). But I'm in a quandry as to which resonator to use. I don't quite understand the purpose of the spider (Dobro) or how the cone is mounted. I once owned a National but as I recall the cone was different than the replacements I've seen. Are scale drawing available somewhere? Thanks.

CHeck out the Music instrument makers forum MIMF, they might be able to help you. Some of the members have made metal-body resonators. I think the metal ones are silver-soldered.
I love the sound of a tricone in the right hands. Mine are not yet those hands so I still learn on my folk I have a CD with a Mary Flower song called "Hobo's Hop" played on a tricone, great fingerstyle sound. |

that National Custom All Koa -I'm going to make a statement. It might be the most beautiful guitar I've ever seen. I would kill to own that thing. How old is it and how does it sound? The bling is so tasteful on that instrument. For me personally - that thing is nailed. I'm totally smitten.
Wowwee! Like looking at Sophia Loren at age 18. Mama mia! |

Koaguitarman you know how I feel about your guitar from other Forums. Please; just to be kind, tell me it soundas like crap, has all kinds of buzzes and ghost notes. It's stiff and hard to play and is so heavy that you can't stand to play it for more than 10 mins. tops. Please tell me I'm right, so I can sleep at night. WHAT A GUITAR!!!!!!
Ben Franklin discovered it, but it took Bob Moog to find it's proper use.

But if you see the current post of my last adventure you will see the sweet Duolian I was given (which by the way, I turned down a 1.8ct diamond for it,as I know nothing of diamonds) O53~aka~SteveO
