strum hand pain! |

I've just took up guitar recently. I'm an over 40 that always wanted to play and finally forced myself to get going. Anyway, I usually only get a chance to play for 1/2 hour at a time most. I went to my first jam session recently and played for about 2-1/2 hours straight. By the end, my strumming hand (actually forearm) hurt so badly I could barely move it. Has anyone experienced this before? Is it a carpal tunnel type of thing? Any suggestions on how keep it from happening again - maybe I am doing something wrong in the way I am strumming or fingerpicking?
Any ideas would be a great help. |

Perhaps you are far too tense in your hand while strumming.
You need to strum the guitar with a very relaxed and loose wrist-- you need to do it in such a way that it is almost the gravity doing all of the work for you. This is difficult for me to put into words without seeing you strum. |

Ditto...relaxed right hand technique is what you need to work upon.

Thank you both for the feedback. That's probably what it is. I was playing with some people for the first time and was a bit nervous so I bet I was really tensed up. Yet another good reason to relax and go with the flow...
