1. drink all of the wine as fast as you can straight from the bottle.
2. break bottle over your head. 3. look for the neck of the bottle after coming to. 4. If you can't find bottle neck, repeat steps 1 thru 3. |

needed....glass cutter, lit candle, bucket of water, empty wine bottle, med grade emory cloth sandpaper...
first gauge how long you want the slide by putting your finger in the wine bottle. score the bottle where the end of your finger lined up. make the score mark straight all the way around the neck, this may take some practice. next hold and turn the bottle over the flame where you scored it. after about 30 sec, dip the neck of the bottle in the bucket of water you should hear it crack. tap the bottle at the score line on the edge of the bucket or other firm surface. if the neck doesn't separate, repeat the process. now take the bottleneck and sand it down with the emory to keep bleeding to a min. |

Muddy Waters told Guitar Player magazine you soak a piece of string in kerosene, wrap it around the neck of the
bottle, and set it on fire. Supposedly the neck will pop off after this.
From what I've heard from people doing it themselves, it works better if you stick the bottle in cold water before you try to pop off the neck. That said, the most important part is sanding off every bit of sharp edge. And you will have little jags. |

Over the years, I have seen many different schemes for making wine-bottle slides, most of which end in broken bits of glass. This is relatively sure-fire
(I just made one).
Obtain, borrow, or buy a Dremel or similar rotary tool. (You REALLY need one, they are fantastic) Put in a cut-off wheel. The reinforced kind work the best. Using the cut-off wheel, score a groove carefully around the bottle neck at the point you wish. This groove does not need to be deep, nor do you need to apply much pressure. Just make sure it doesnt wander all over the place. Take the scored bottle by the base and gently tap the mouth on a piece of wood. The neck should break off cleanly. You can then use the same cutoff wheel to gently remove any sharp edges. We cigar-box builders all play slide, and tend to experiment with a lot of them. Socket wrenches, copper tubing (my personal fave) bone...Experiment. |
