Have you heard?!! tha MPA (music publishers assosciation) is shutting down tablature websites as we speak, claiming it is unlawful to supply tabs to the public. AHHH what are we going to do?

There was a good bit of discussion about the issue of online lyrics and tab on UMGF recently. There is also a good post in the archives on copyright issues. I wouldn't immediately assume that OLGA has been taken down by the music industry, tho'. You'd think there would be some kind of notice on their homepage if that were the case. It appears to be a technical issue, IMO.

More worrysome to me is that fact that Google delists sites whose political content it doesn't agree with.

I am under the impression that one can post a TAB for a copywrited song IF they acknowledge that it is from their own work at transcribing the music, and it is for educational purposes.
This can't be correct, but I have seen that many times. |

OLGA has mirrors. My own saved link for OLGA searches still seems to work. I just searched for Cannonball Rag and found two versions, one by Merle Travis and one traditional. I was offered three mirrors for each version. In each case the U.S. mirror could not be reached but when I tried the Australian mirror, I got the file.

Way back when P2P started, I anticipated there was going to be a huge glut of great TAB books available, but they just do not exist in huge numbers.
You can easily get any obscure mp3 file, but common TAB songs/folios are impossible to find. I do not understand how the sound part of the music industry is powerless against piracy, yet the publishing part of the music industry has things locked up quite nicely. Perhaps because the numbers of people who play insturments are considerably less than the number who listen to it. |

Quote: I wouldn't exactly say that, since I am hearing more and more stories of labels coming after individuals who have downloaded stuff. Or typically, the parents get sued for stuff their kid downloaded. The average is about 2500 songs, at a buck a song (penalty). The record labels are monitoring limewire, kazaa, and other filesharing apps. They are killing the golden goose IMO. |

Regardless of who does the transcription or the intended purpose, it is considered unauthorized publication of another person's intellectual property.
